Club Info

We are an AMA Chartered Club (#279) and part of District VI. As per our and DuPage Forest Preserve rules we require members to have current AMA full membership. See the AMA web site to join up and for a full list of benefits including insurance.

Our flying field is on DuPage County Forest Preserve land within Waterfall Glen. There are some rules and regulations which we have to follow. Download their model aircraft brochure to read these rules and see the locations of other DuPage Forest Preserve flying sites.

The Forest Preserve requires all flyers to have a model aircraft permit. They are free to those over 65 and Veterans. Sign up online, or purchase at their Visitor Center in Wheaton.

To promote safe flying we have some simple Flying Field Safety and Operational rules. Club Members and Visitors please read and follow these rules. You can download a copy at the bottom of this page, and to see where we can & can't fly. 

The FAA handles all laws and regulations coving UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) and Drones. For the most part RC aircraft are considered as drones/UAS, and therefore pilots need to register with the FAA and take the Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST). There is loads of information on their website including links to registration and TRUST.

The Club has a Members' Handbook (updated March 2020) which contains lots of useful information about our flying site. You can download a copy at the bottom of the page.

The Club has a new Student Training Manual put together by our Chief Instructor. This is a great resource not only for new flyers, but also existing flyers. Please take a moment to read it. You can download a copy at the bottom of the page.

We hold a monthly meeting on the first Tuesday of each month at the VFW Post #503, 5101 Belmont Rd, Downers Grove starting at 7:00pm. Guests are welcome to attend. Check the calendar for dates. 

The Club regularly communicates with its Members via email and Slack. We also have a newsletter "The Windy Flyer". Please contact the Editor Ed Miller with anything that you would like included such as articles, How-Tos, photos, items for sale.

Our flying field is a FRIA location. A FRIA is a defined geographic area where RC aircraft can be flown without Remote ID equipment. Both the aircraft and the pilot must be located within the FRIA's boundaries throughout the operation, and the pilot must be able to see it at all times throughout the duration of the flight.
